Tritons Dedicate Season to Stewart
San Clemente will unveil its new uniforms today at Pacific Club in a ceremony dedicating the Tritons’ season to former PGA Tour star Payne Stewart.
Complete with the trademark knickers, tam-o'-shanter hats and argyle socks, the uniforms are a tribute to Stewart, who became known for the unique apparel as well as stellar play before he died in a plane crash last October.
San Clemente Coach Larry Holbrook is an avid admirer of Stewart. Holbrook had been toying with the idea of having his team dress like the two-time U.S. Open champion for several years and finally put the plan into action after Stewart’s death.
“He was the epitome of a gentleman golfer,” Holbrook said. “He was the kind of golfer I have no problem having the kids look up to.”
Today’s ceremony begins at 1 and will include a bagpipe player.
The junior varsity and freshman teams will also wear the uniforms, which are black hats, black pants, red collared shirts and red, white and black argyle socks. Holbrook and his staff will also don the garb.
“It’s a nice tribute to a guy who gave a lot to golf,” Holbrook said.
SERRA HEADING SOUTH
The Serra League filed and won an appeal with the Southern Section about its placement in the divisional playoffs.
Original divisional groupings had the Serra League, which includes Santa Margarita, Servite and Mater Dei, in the Northern Divisional May 8 at Soule Park GC in Ojai.
After the appeal, the league has been placed in the Western Regional at L.A. Royal Vista in Walnut.
Since the Southern Section finals are three days later at Saticoy CC in Somis, the section agreed the travel strain was too much.
“I don’t blame them [for the appeal],” Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton said. “I wouldn’t want to travel that far either.”
The top two teams from each of eight divisional tournaments advance to the Southern Section finals.
Brea Olinda, ranked ninth in the county, gets a few early-season tests this week. The Wildcats play No. 7 Villa Park today at Western Hills and then travel to Coto de Caza Thursday for a match with No. 2 Santa Margarita. The Wildcats also play Olympic League favorite Orange Lutheran Wednesday at Willowick.
