Harvard-Westlake Reaches Semifinals

Andrew Rosenfeld, Jesse Ferlianto, Aron Gortman and Allan Haldeman helped the Harvard-Westlake High win two matches Friday and advance to the semifinals of the National High School Tennis All-American tournament today at the Palisades Club in Newport Beach.

Rosenfeld, Gortman and Ferlianto each won two eight-game, pro-set singles matches as Harvard-Westlake defeated Clovis West of Fresno, 6-3, in the first round and beat Brentwood, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the at Huntington Beach Tennis Club.

The tournament includes teams from California, Colorado, Florida, New York and Virginia. Every team won either a division, district or state title last year.

Fifth-seeded Harvard-Westlake (7-1) plays Peninsula, which handed the Wolverines their only loss, in the semifinals at 1 p.m. The title match is at 6 p.m.

Gortman and Haldeman also won two doubles matches Friday, even though Gortman has a sore ankle and shoulder and served underhanded.

Rosenfeld and Ferlianto, a transfer from Hart, lost their doubles match against Clovis West. They rallied from a 6-3 deficit to win the last five games, however, and beat Brentwood, 8-6, in the decisive competition of that match.

In other boys’ tennis matches:

Simi Valley 15, Moorpark 3--Jeremiah Waggoner and J.P. Agustin dropped one game in sweeping three sets for the Pioneers (4-3, 2-2) in a Marmonte League victory at Arroyo Vista Park in Moorpark.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal def. Agoura, 15-11, 15-3, 15-5--David Russell had 13 kills for the Highlanders in a Marmonte League victory at Agoura.

Casey Wilkinson added 12 kills for Royal (6-0, 4-0), which is ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.

Andrew Chest led Agoura with 15 kills.

Oxnard def. Channel Islands, 4-15, 15-11, 15-17, 15-12, 16-14--Setter Alfred Reft had 10 kills, 43 assists, eight digs and five blocks for the Yellowjackets in a Pacific View League victory at Channel Islands.

Reft blocked a Channel Islands hit with the score tied at 14 in the final game, then served twice for the Oxnard (4-1, 3-0) win.

Taft def. Granada Hills, 15-6, 15-5, 15-3--Mike Gledhill had 10 kills and eight blocks for the Toreadors in a West Valley League victory at Taft.

Masood Noorzay had 11 kills for Taft (5-0, 2-0).
