Brown Returning at Thousand Oaks

Chuck Brown is expected to be named girls’ basketball coach at Thousand Oaks High this week, taking over a program he guided to two Southern Section titles before retiring in 1998.

Brown was 319-113 and won eight Marmonte League titles in 16 seasons with the Lancers.

He was recently offered the job at new Oaks Christian in Westlake Village, but turned it down last week when Thousand Oaks announced that Tom Strasburger would not return as coach.

Brown, 65, has continued to teach and coach lower-level football and baseball at Thousand Oaks.

Athletic Director Lou Lichtl was unavailable for comment.

Strasburger, a longtime assistant to Brown, was 19-31 in two seasons.

* Jammie Harris of Canoga Park and Ryan Logan of Grant have been added to the City Section team that will play the Southern Section in the Battle of the Valley 2000 all-star basketball game at 7:30 p.m. April 7 at Cal State Northridge.

FOOTBALL

* Bill Culpepper, a former Westlake High assistant who brought a wide-open passing attack to Clint High in Texas, has been named football coach at Chaminade.

Culpepper, 32, served six years as an assistant to Jim Benkert at Westlake and also coached at Viewpoint in Calabasas before spending the last three years at Clint, where he installed a passing attack that ranked among the best in Texas.

Culpepper will replace Ed Croson, who resigned and is now the coach at Birmingham.

SOFTBALL

* Michigan freshman Melinda Moulden, a Crescenta Valley graduate, went six for 12 with eight runs batted in during four Boilermaker Invitational games last weekend and was named Big Ten Conference co-player of the week.

Moulden, a .269 hitter, went three for three with a three-run home run against Notre Dame pitcher Jennifer Sharon, a Thousand Oaks graduate, in the Wolverines’ 5-1 victory.

SOCCER

* Ron Lindberg, who guided the Hart High boys’ team to the Foothill League championship, will not coach the Indians next season after his teaching assignment was not renewed.
