Wilkerson Leads Santa Margarita Past Mater Dei

Starting pitcher Matt Wilkerson helped himself, going four for four with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs and scoring two runs to help 10th-ranked Santa Margarita defeat No. 6 Mater Dei, 12-6, in Serra League baseball Wednesday.

The Eagles (6-4, 1-1) led by one run going into the fourth inning before scoring five to put the game out of reach.

The big hits in the inning were a two-run home run by Michael Beattie and a two-run double by Wilkerson. Chris Rix hit a home run for the Eagles to lead off the game.

Josh Hansen had two RBIs for the Monarchs (7-4).

In the Freeway League:

No. 8 La Habra 7, Sunny Hills 6--Tristan Gadberry hit a tie-breaking seventh-inning grand slam for the visiting Highlanders (9-1, 4-0). Sunny Hills scored three times in the bottom of the inning before reliever Bryan Gailey (2-0) extinguished the threat.

In the Garden Grove League:

No. 4 La Quinta 3, Bolsa Grande 1--Catcher Arnulfo Arroyo scored the tying run and singled in the go-ahead run for the host Aztecs (11-0, 3-0). Jim Garvey (4-0) got the victory and reliever Tom Zieglowsky picked up his fourth save. Bolsa Grande is 7-5, 1-1.

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 9, Santa Ana 3--Shortstop Christian Martinez had three hits and two RBIs and Michael Castillo (3-0) pitched a complete game for the visiting Tillers (7-4, 3-0). Eric Perez had two hits and two RBIs for Santa Ana (4-7, 3-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 16, Magnolia 11 (6, darkness)--In a game that featured 17 runs, 31 hits and seven errors, Brea Olinda (6-5, 3-1) came back with nine runs in the last two innings to get the victory. Ron Benigno had four hits with four RBIs and Ron Congelliere had two hits and three RBIs for the Wildcats, who remained tied for first place in league with Valencia.

Valencia 7, Western 6--Sal Mora drove in the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the sixth for Valencia (7-3, 3-1) which remained in first place in league.

Matt Reese allowed five hits while striking nine batters to win his third game of the season for the Tigers.

In the Sea View League:

Laguna Hills 10, Newport Harbor 9--Brian Anderson’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning scored Chris Turner for the win.

Laguna Hills was helped by Newport Harbor’s Cody Forsythe, who had two balks, resulting in Turner’s advance to third.

Newport Harbor’s Justin Jacobs hit a grand slam to open up an eight-run, second inning. But Laguna Hills came back with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Joe Viglione helped Laguna Hills with two hits, a home run and a double, and three RBIs.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 6, Capistrano Valley 3--Geoff Overstreet threw a complete game six-hitter to lead Dana Hills (4-6-1, 1-3). Sophomore Tony Davidson was three for three with a home run and two RBIs for the Dolphins. Matt Cooper hit his second home run of the season for Dana Hills in the three-run sixth inning.

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Esperanza 12, Marina 7--Esperanza got a scare from unranked Marina after the Vikings scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead. But Nathan Brandt’s three-run double in the bottom of the sixth kick-started Esperanza’s nine-run inning. David Nicholson also contributed to the comeback with three hits and an RBI for the Aztecs (10-1, 3-1).

No. 3 Fountain Valley 9, Edison 1--Bryan Daguio was three for five with a single, double and triple and scored three runs for Fountain Valley (9-2, 3-1) which remained tied for first place in league with Esperanza.
