Taft Aces Fremont Out of Volleyball Playoffs

Bryan Capper had seven kills and four aces as top-seeded Taft High trounced Fremont, 15-4, 15-2, 15-6, in the first round of the City Championship volleyball tournament Tuesday at Taft.

Coach Doug Magorien of Taft (14-0) played reserves in the third game, when Eric Goren had four aces.

Grant def. Roosevelt, 15-10, 15-12, 15-12--Krishna Evans had 10 kills and seven blocks, and Michael Charleston had nine kills and 10 blocks for the Lancers (11-3) in a City Championship first-round victory at Grant.

Kennedy def. Wilson, 15-13, 12-15, 16-14, 15-3--Dax Grooms had 33 kills to help the Golden Cougars win a City Invitational first-round match at Wilson.

Kevin Tanka had 46 assists for Kennedy (5-9).

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Golden League finals--Senior Rodney Woods of Littlerock won the boys’ triple jump with a season best of 47-9 1/2 and the long jump in a wind-aided 22-1.

Senior Desiree Withers of Palmdale won the girls’ triple jump with a career-best 38-5 that broke the school record of 37-9 1/2 set by Kadrina Coffee in 1995, and moved to seventh on the all-time region list.

BOYS’ GOLF

City 5-A League Championship--Carey Evans fired a two-over-par 73 and Mike Tamburro toured Rancho Park Golf Course in 74 strokes to help El Camino Real to a second-place finish at 403 strokes, earning the Conquistadores a berth in the City Finals, May 23-24, at Griffith Park.

Tri-Valley League Match No. 5--Junior James Logeman of Oak Park shot a two-over-par 72 to earn medalist honors, but Nordhoff defeated the Eagles, 379-392, at Santa Barbara Golf Club.

Logeman’s 72 pulled him to within one stroke of leader Tommy Hajduk of Nordhoff in the individual standings with the final league match to be played at Elkins Ranch on Thursday.

Oak Park (26-2) leads Nordhoff by 17 strokes in the team standings.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 16, Hart 2--The Bulldogs won all nine doubles sets and romped to their 13th consecutive Foothill League title at Hart.

Eugene Shin and Min Kang, playing at No. 1 doubles, lost only seven games in three sets for Burbank (16-2, 9-0).

Poly 24 1/2, Belmont 5--Marco Ceballos and Chaitanya Aysola each won three of four matches and the Parrots (9-4) won a City Invitational first-round playoff at Poly.

Monroe 20, Garfield 9 1/2--Jerry Yang and Arthur Ternersesian each won three double sets for the Vikings in a City Invitational match at Monroe.

Monroe (9-5) won eight of nine sets in doubles play.

Campbell Hall 15, Montclair Prep 3--Adam Zunder earned his 200th career victory, sweeping at No. 1 singles for the Vikings (8-8, 3-4) in a Delphic League victory at Valley College.
