Grace Brethren Pitcher Sets Victory Record

Pitcher Tim Thompson of Simi Valley Grace Brethren broke the Southern Section baseball record for victories Wednesday in a 10-0 five-inning Heritage League victory over Canoga Park Faith Baptist at Grace Brethren.

Thompson, a senior who will attend Cal Lutheran University, won his 52nd game, breaking the record of 51 set by Scott McGregor of El Segundo in 1969-72.

Thompson is 13-2 this season for Grace Brethren (19-4, 10-0 in league play), the two-time defending Division VI champion.

With defending champion and Olympic hopeful Erica Sorgi of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley absent, Allison Brennan of Huntington Beach Edison seized the opportunity and won the girls’ Division I diving championship at Heritage Park Aquatics Complex in Irvine.

Brennan finished with 518.80 points for her 11 dives to edge Tiffany Manning of Capistrano Valley (515.65) and Leanne Dumais of Ventura Buena (510.45).

Ray Vincent of El Toro won the boys’ title with 610.45 points. Dae Don Cho of Mission Viejo finished second (581.25) and Derek Starks of Capistrano Valley was third (570.00).

In Division II, Anaheim Servite freshman Michael Hilde set a division record with 601.80 points to win at Claremont McKenna Aquatics Complex. Hilde’s broke the 1999 record of 589.60 points by defending champion Louie Gagnet of Irvine University.

Gagnet finished second Wednesday with 582.85 points.

Joey Castellani of Crescenta Valley was third with 381.45 points.

In Division III at Cuesta College, Thomas McCrummen of San Dimas won the boys’ title with 463.77 points. Justin Winn of Cerritos Valley Christian was second (440.40) and Max Bookman of Brentwood was third (438.00).

Kristin Olson of Pasadena Poly won the girls’ title with 415.70 points. Juliana Bonilla of Bonita (400.55) and Lindsay Stephens of Huntington Beach Brethren Christian (373.80) were second and third, respectively.
