Southern Section Division I preliminaries--Marcus Raines of Littlerock High had the fastest qualifying times in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, but he wanted more.

“Overall, I liked it, but I know I could’ve done a lot better,” Raines said. “But considering it’s just the prelims and I’m coming off a cold, I should be happy.”

There was nothing wrong with winning the 110 hurdles in 14.50 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 38.79 seconds.

For good measure, the junior also qualified fifth in the long jump (22-0 3/4).

Raines said he was strengthened by the performance of his close friend, teammate Rodney Woods, who had the top qualifying marks in the long jump (22-11 3/4) and triple jump (47-7 1/4).

Junior Anita Siraki of Hoover also was impressive, posting the fastest qualifying times of 4:58.31 in the 1,600 and 10:35.67 in the 3,200. Siraki is the defending Division I champion in both events.

Porchea Carroll of Rio Mesa, one of the top sprinters in the state, won her heat and had the fourth-best qualifying time of 12.22 in the girls’ 100. She also qualified sixth in the 200 in 24.81.

Jerrick Holmes of Palmdale, who has cleared 7-0 in the high jump this year, was among five who cleared 6-5 in the event.
