Providence’s game May 5 was nearly postponed because of a fire in the garage of assistant coach Greg Renta.
Nobody was injured and damage was minor, but batting helmets, baseballs and bases were charred and unusable.
But members of the Providence Parent Executive Committee moved quickly, allocating nearly $800 for new equipment.
“They basically came to our rescue,” said Athletic Director Andrew Bencze. “They said, ‘Let’s make sure the kids get equipment.’ ”
They did, and Providence defeated Viewpoint, 5-2.
