County Players Getting Their Kicks

Several county underclassmen have made big soccer contributions around the state.

Midfielder Victor Guerrero, formerly of Century High, has four goals and eight assists for Cal State Dominguez Hills, which is ranked third in the NCAA Division II.

Jeff Kunze, from Edison High, has started every game for Dominguez Hills (17-1-1). He has received high praise from Coach Joe Flanagan for being an major part of Dominguez Hills’ defense, which has given up only 19 goals. The Toros host the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s and women’s tournaments Thursday through Sunday.

Loyola Marymount freshman Kevin Novak, who attended Mater Dei, scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Lions’ 3-2 overtime victory over No. 8 Portland on Oct. 22.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Five former high school standoutsreturn to the county at 7 p.m. Sunday when Columbia plays at UC Irvine. At 5 p.m. Monday, Columbia plays at Cal State Fullerton.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Beauregard (Mater Dei) leads Columbia in digs at 3.78 per game. Middle blocker Kathy Lavold (Newport Harbor) is the Ivy League’s leader in hitting percentage at .356. Setter Julia Topik (University) averages a team-high 10.42 assists per game. Freshman opposite Meghan Feeney (Mater Dei) is tied for second on the team with 31 aces. Freshman reserve setter Marissa Balak (St. Margaret’s) has played in 24 of the Lions’ 88 games.

Sophomore middle blocker Sally Jahraus, who attends Cal Lutheran, and went to Laguna Beach High, has recorded season-highs of 20 kills Friday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and 22 digs against Cal State Hayward Sept. 29. Last season Jahraus was an all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection.

NOTABLE

Former Fountain Valley High golfer Candie Kung, a sophomore at USC, leads the Trojans Friday when they tee off in the first round of the three-day Golf World Invitational at Hilton Head, S.C. Kung began the season as the top-ranked college golfer in the country, according to the College Golf Foundation. Her second-round score of 67 at the recent Stanford Women’s Intercollegiate Tournament was the best round by a Trojan this season.
