Los Alamitos Topples No. 6 Esperanza in Volleyball

Los Alamitos beat sixth-ranked Esperanza in a Sunset League girls’ volleyball match, 10-15, 15-9, 15-11, 15-8, Tuesday at Los Alamitos.

Sara Kroneberger had 18 kills, Drue Wawrzynski had 13 and Jamie Garbisch and Meagan Goria contributed 10 kills each for the Griffins (11-8, 5-3 in league).

Esperanza is 10-5, 7-2.

In another Sunset match:

No. 4 Huntington Beach 3, Marina 1--Jennifer Gardikas had 22 kills and Serena Bountour contributed 20 for the Oilers (14-3, 8-1), who won, 15-3, 11-15, 16-14, 15-13.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 7 Corona del Mar 3, University 0--Lindsay Anstandig and Sara Deming had 10 kills each for visiting Corona Del Mar (14-8, 8-1), which swept, 15-11, 15-11, 15-4.

In the Academy League girls’ cross-country finals:

St. Margaret’s 16, Downey Calvary Chapel, 39, Connelly 84--Senior Ligaya Lange ran Irvine Regional Park’s three-mile course in 19 minutes 33 seconds, almost two full minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

In the first round of the field hockey Tournament of Champions:

Newport Harbor 1, Santa Ana 0--Elizabeth Evans assisted on freshman Jillianne Whitfield’s penalty shot goal with 8:56 remaining for the host Sailors (18-3-1).

In nonleague football:

Vista Tri-City Christian 20, Saddleback Valley Christian 14--Leading 6-0, the Warriors (0-6) fell behind when Tri-City scored on a 78-yard touchdown pass and two half-back passes in the third quarter that also went for touchdowns.

Saddleback Valley junior running back Caleb Hoovestal, who rushed 13 times for 138 yards, had a 40-yard touchdown run and quarterback Chris Frey had a 22-yard touchdown pass to Brian Harbin.

Frey completed four of 11 passes for 169 yards.

Tri-City Christian is 3-5.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

No. 10 Villa Park 16, Santa Ana Valley 2--By sweeping in doubles, Amber Smetana and Leah Becker helped the Spartans secure a first-place tie with Canyon.

In the Serra League:

No. 5 Mater Dei 17, Lakewood St. Joseph 1--Jodie Nygaard swept in singles to improve to 39-2 for the Monarchs (13-3, 8-0). Their 34th straight league victory gave the Monarchs the league title.

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 14, No. 4 El Toro 6--Ryan Cook had four goals for host Newport Harbor (22-5), which outscored El Toro, 9-2, in the second half. Brett McLeave scored four goals for El Toro (15-11).
