Downey Calvary Chapel 74, St. Margaret’s 35--Downey Calvary Chapel rolled up 289 yards rushing in the first half on its way to a 40-point second quarter and a 52-21 halftime lead, dashing St. Margaret’s playoff hopes at St. Matthias High in Downey.
Matt Madrid had 21 carries for 213 yards and scored three touchdowns and Anthony Robinson had 158 yards in 15 carries with two touchdowns for the Grizzlies (7-2, 2-1), who finished with 413 yards rushing.
The Tartans (4-3-1, 1-2) scored first on a 38-yard pass from Cory Westrope to Erik Hallenbeck in the first quarter.
The Grizzlies then got Madrid scoring runs of one and 35 yards, missing both extra points, to take a 12-7 lead.
The Tartans’ Donnie Reed scored on a 52-yard run and the point after made it 14-12.
But the Grizzlies followed with five more touchdowns before intermission for a 52-21 lead.
Westrope completed six of 12 passes for 163 yards with two touchdowns and Reed had 103 yards in six carries and a touchdown. Ryan Birtcher also played at quarterback for St. Margaret’s, completing six of 20 passes for 140 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
