Matadors Hoping to Catch Up to Osgood

More record-breakers are in store for Cal State Northridge when the Matadors play their final home football game of the season Saturday, a nonconference game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Northridge is coming off a 64-61 loss to Cal State Sacramento in a Big Sky Conference game that set a Division I record for points scored.

This week the Matadors (3-6) will have to contend with sophomore Kassim Osgood of San Luis Obispo (3-6). He caught a school-record 17 passes for a I-AA-record 376 yards in a 43-41 loss to Northern Iowa on Saturday at San Luis Obispo.

Osgood broke the record of 370 yards by Michael Lerch of Princeton in 1991. Troy Edwards, a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, holds the Division I single-game record with 405 yards for Louisiana Tech in 1998.

Osgood has a school-record 66 receptions this season. Seth Burford set a school record against Northern Iowa with 566 yards passing.

Northridge and San Luis Obispo last met in 1995, with the Mustangs winning, 49-7. San Luis Obispo leads the series, 27-8, dating to 1962.

Montana (8-1, 6-0 in the Big Sky) moved to No. 1 in the Division I-AA rankings for the first time since 1997 after a 38-21 victory over Idaho State.

The Grizzlies, ranked No. 3 last week, replaced Georgia Southern (8-2) as the No. 1 team.

Georgia Southern was upset by Furman (7-2), 45-10, Saturday.

Dorian Stitt of Cal Lutheran can finish his career Saturday as the Kingsmen’s career rushing and scoring leader.

Stitt, a senior from Royal High, needs 111 yards and eight points in the Kingsmen’s season finale at Claremont-Mudd. Stitt has rushed for 2,828 yards in four seasons.

Fredrik Nanhed (1995-98) is the school’s career leader with 2,938.

With 224 points, Stitt is seven behind Hank Bauer, a running back from 1972-75.

Kicker Ryan Geisler ranks third with 196 points.
