Canyon High freshman Tracy Lin will miss her team’s first-round Division II playoff match today against Sunny Hills because she is playing in an International Tennis Federation tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.

If Canyon, ranked seventh in the county, defeats Sunny Hills, there is a chance Lin could play in the second round Saturday.

* Cal State Fullerton’s Adriana Hockicko and Eleanor Luzano are the top-seeded doubles team in today’s qualifying round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. Regional Tournament at UC Irvine. UC Irvine’s Nickole Kabe and Amy Tranckino are seeded fourth. The top-seeded local players in the singles qualifying draw include Tranckino, Kabe and Natalie Exon of Irvine.

Qualifying begins today at 8 a.m.. The main draw begins Friday morning and continues through Monday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Stefanie Schilling, who averaged 10 points to help Troy rise to No. 1 in the Orange County girls’ basketball rankings last season, has left the team.

“There weren’t any problems,” Schilling said. “I wasn’t enjoying it anymore, and it’s way too time-consuming to do something you don’t enjoy.”

LUNCHEON

Steve Lavin, UCLA men’s basketball coach, USC assistant Dave Miller, Pat Douglass of UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton’s Donny Daniels will be the speakers Tuesday at the Sports Newsmakers Luncheon, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Arrowhead Pond.

UCLA and USC will be participating in this year’s John Wooden Classic on Dec. 2 at the Pond. The Bruins will play Georgia Tech and the Trojans will meet Utah.

The luncheon, open to the public, is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Reservations can be made by calling (714) 758-0222.

Kristen Borland resigned as assistant women’s soccer coach at UC Irvine. She intends to be married in January and will relocate to San Francisco.
