CROSS-COUNTRY

City preliminaries--Senior Natalie Stein of North Hollywood cut 25 seconds off her previous best on the three-mile course at Pierce College with a 17:25 clocking to win the first of two qualifying heats and move to second on the all-time course performer list.

“I was trying to run hard,” said Stein, hampered by a cold in the Sunset Six League finals last week. “I wanted to get my best time.”

So did Germain Ortiz of Monroe, who clocked 15:24 to place second in his heat and cut two seconds off his previous best at Pierce.

Ortiz, sixth in the City final last year, ran in a pack behind senior Chris Wells-Anders of El Camino Real before surging into the lead near the midway point.

He led the rest of the way until senior Oscar Sanchez of Eagle Rock nipped him at the finish.

Ortiz’s effort paced Monroe to a second-place total of 65 points.

Taft, led by senior Daniel Clements’ third-place clocking of 15:36, placed first with 50 points.
