Claremont-Mudd 49, Cal Lutheran 31--Ryan Gocong rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns for the Stags as a frustrating season ended for Cal Lutheran at Claremont-Mudd.

Gocong, who played quarterback at Carpinteria High, tied a school record with 43 carries and helped Claremont-Mudd (4-5, 1-4) wear down the Kingsmen (3-6, 1-4) in the second half.

Cal Lutheran’s Dorian Stitt, a senior running back, scored two touchdowns to set the school career scoring record. Stitt, who also owns the school record for career all-purpose yards and ranks second in rushing yards, has 233 points, seven more than Hank Bauer.

“Going into this season, I never thought I’d get close to the scoring record,” said Stitt, who finished the season with 14 touchdowns.

Stitt, who broke the record with his second touchdown, a 12-yard run in the second quarter, was still clutching the ball after the game.

The Kingsmen led, 24-21, at halftime, but the cool weather and intermittent rain in the second half was perfect for the Stags’ ball-control offense.

Cal Lutheran ran only four plays in the third quarter.

With Cal Lutheran trailing, 42-31, Chris Czernek’s pass was intercepted by Doug Kidney of Claremont-Mudd at the Stag 30-yard line with 3:08 to play.

Czernek completed 24 of 36 passes for 312 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions.
