Slogan or No, Buena Will Drive for Five

Rick Scott is running out of T-shirt slogans.

The Buena High football coach recently guided the Bulldogs to their fourth consecutive Channel League championship, an achievement when considering the Bulldogs had not won an outright league title in nearly 25 years.

But with the most recent conquest comes another challenge . . . thinking up a clever mantra to put on the team T-shirts next year.

It was easy when the Bulldogs went for a second title (“Back-to-back”), a third (“Three-peat”) and a fourth (“Get out of the door, we’re going for four”).

But Scott said he’s tapped on ideas for next year.

“The parents always want to do T-shirts, but I can’t think of anything to say,” said Scott, who can thank this year’s senior class for his quandary.

Freddy Keiaho, Jake Scott, Ryan Cobos, Brandon Faumuina and Paul Johnsonbaugh have lost only one league game in their three-year varsity careers and were part of a freshman team that went 10-0.

“When we brought them up as sophomores, it was to build for the future,” Scott said. “But they helped us almost immediately. Winning these titles has a lot to do with this group.”

Buena (8-2) hosts Channel Islands (3-7) on Friday night in a first-round game of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs.
