Once Second-Rate, Canyons Second-Best

Susan Latch finished third and Courtney Renfro was fourth to help College of the Canyons place second in the the California State Community College golf championships Tuesday at Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert.

Latch shot seven-over-par 79 to finish with a two-day total of 156--five shots behind individual champion Russamee Gulyanamitta of Mt. San Antonio and four back of runner-up Hye-Yoon Jung of Fullerton.

Renfro had a five-over 77 and a two-day score of 159.

Mt. SAC won the team title with a score of 658. Canyons, which rebounded from an 0-10 season a year ago to go 17-2 and win the Western State Conference title, scored 689. Foothill was third at 696.

“The difference is, last year we went out and recruited students who had golf experience,” said Canyons Coach Gary Peterson, who piloted the Cougar men’s team to the state championship last spring. “This year we went out and recruited golfers and gave them student experience.”

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Canyons 2, Bakersfield 1--Heather Zubis’ second-half goal lifted the Cougars (16-5-2) in the first round of the Southern California regional at Canyons.

Kristine Marbach also scored for Canyons.

Oxnard 2, Mt. San Antonio 2--Anna McCrosky scored for Oxnard in the 80th minute to force overtime, and she had the Condors’ only goal in the penalty-kick session won by the Eagles, 3-1, in a first-round Southern California Regional playoff game at Mt. SAC.

Priscilla Olsen scored the other Oxnard goal in the 15th minute, and Norma Gutierrez added two assists for the Condors (15-5-3).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 102, Victor Valley 55--Desmond Penigar scored 22 points, Shaun Ballard 19 and Greg Dickinson 14 for the Pirates (2-1) in a nonconference victory at Victor Valley.
