Jones Helps Cougars Gain Semifinals

Lauren Jones’ sweep in No. 1 singles helped Capistrano Valley to an 11-7 quarterfinal victory over visiting Long Beach Poly in a Southern Section Division I girls’ tennis playoff Tuesday.
Jones, a sophomore, defeated Poly’s Ivan King in the first set, 6-2, and then won her next two sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Capistrano Valley (16-7) will face Palos Verdes Peninsula in the semifinals Thursday.
In Division I:
Dana Hills 16, Long Beach Wilson 2--Senior Chelsy Thompson’s sweep included a 7-6 victory over previously unbeaten Christina Visico. Second-seeded Dana Hills (21-4) faces Upland in the semifinals.
Palos Verdes Peninsula 15, Esperanza 3--Using a 6-0 sweep from junior Colby Comstock, playing the No. 3 singles slot, the top-seeded Panthers (23-0) dispatched the Aztecs (15-6) at home.
In Division III:
Mater Dei 15, El Dorado 3--Emily Boyd and Stacey Rose swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 and Casey Knutson and Julie Litrich swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, in doubles for second-seeded host Mater Dei (16-3), which faces Newport Harbor in a semifinal.
Newport Harbor 14, Glendora St. Lucy’s 4--Krista McIntosh and Megan Henkins swept, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for visiting Newport Harbor (18-1).
In Division IV:
Calabasas 14, Northwood 4--One of the few highlights for Northwood (11-9) was Gloriann Lopez’s 6-1 victory over Erin Everly, Calabasas’ No. 1 singles player. Calabasas (20-3) was 163-3 in singles play this year.
Corona del Mar 14, San Marino 4--After dropping the first set, 5-7, the Sea Kings’ top singles player Anne Yelsey rebounded to win, 6-0, 6-0. Corona del Mar finished 23-2.
Laguna Beach 13, Palos Verdes Chadwick 5--Junior Lindsey Butterwick had the only sweep in singles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, for visiting Laguna Beach (14-6).
