Carson’s Lamela Wins First Girls’ Golf Title

Sophomore Maria Lamela of Carson High won the first City Section girls’ golf championship Wednesday at Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys.

Lamela shot four-over-par 80 to defeat Jee Hee Hwang of Van Nuys Birmingham and Joi Hart of Westchester, both of whom finished at 82. Hwang was awarded second place because she posted a 41 on the back nine, two strokes better than Hart.

Jee Hee Hwang, a sophomore, and her older sister, Min Hee, a senior who finished fourth, helped Birmingham win the inaugural team title with a score of 294.

Birmingham defeated Chatsworth by eight strokes.

“It’s a great thrill for us to win it,” Birmingham Coach Chick Epstein said. “This is a terrific accomplishment for the team.”

Jessica Wright of Monroe finished fifth with 90 and Chatsworth’s Zeno Ho was sixth with 95.

Birmingham, Lamela and nine other individuals qualified for the state championship tournament Nov. 27 and 28 in Murrieta.

Girls’ volleyball championship matches will be played Friday night at Occidental College.

Sylmar, which was runner-up to Palisades last season, will play Chatsworth in the Championship Division final at 7:30 p.m.

Sylmar defeated San Pedro and Chatsworth defeated Poly in semifinal matches.

Carson plays Granada Hills Kennedy for the Invitational division title at 5:30 p.m.

The Belmont boys’s and girls’ teams are regarded as the favorites to win City Section cross-country championships Saturday at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

The top two boys and girls teams will qualify for the state championship meet Nov. 25 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
