Palos Verdes Peninsula (27-1) vs. Dana Hills (22-4)

1:30 p.m.

CLAREMONT CLUB

Top-seeded Peninsula is shooting for its ninth Division I title in 10 years. Corona del Mar in 1997 was the only team to beat Peninsula in a final. Peninsula’s only loss came to Beverly Hills, 5-4, in the National High School Tournament. The Panthers defeated Dana Hills, 14-4, earlier this season. But Peninsula Coach Tom Cox said his team will not be overconfident. “A lot of those sets we won were 6-4 or 7-5.” he said. “We know we have to play well.” For Dana Hills to have a chance, it probably needs a sweep from Kady Pooler and a strong performance from its three doubles teams.

Beverly Hills (18-2) vs. Troy (21-4)

10 a.m.

CLAREMONT CLUB

Beverly Hills, the top-seeded team in Division II, has not won a girls’ tennis title since 1975. Troy has never won a girls’ tennis title; the Warriors were edged by Mater Dei in last year’s Division II final, 10-8. Beverly Hills’ only two losses came to Peninsula in Bay League play and it blew out University, 17-1, in the semifinals. But the Normans looked vulnerable in a 9-9 victory over Laguna Beach when they lost all nine doubles sets. For Troy to win, it will need to capitalize on the Normans’ doubles troubles by winning at least six doubles sets.

Palm Desert (23-0) vs. Newport Harbor (17-6)

10:30 a.m.

CLAREMONT CLUB

Top-seeded Palm Desert is shooting for its fourth title in seven years and second in Division III. Newport Harbor appeared in two Division I finals in that span, but lost both matches. Palm Desert has the better record, but not necessarily the better team. The Aztecs dominated the Desert Valley League and were tested only once, in a 12-6 victory over a Woodbridge team that was without No. 1 player Susanna Lingman. Newport Harbor took its lumps early against the top teams in Orange County. But the third-seeded Sailors are more match tough and could pull the upset.

Corona del Mar (20-2) vs. Calabasas (21-0)

11:30 a.m.

CLAREMONT CLUB

Corona del Mar probably would rather be battling Peninsula for the Division I title. But the section’s new rule prohibiting teams from moving up a division has forced the Sea Kings into a romp through the Division IV playoffs. In victories over Pacifica, San Marino and West Hills Chaminade, Corona del Mar has won all 54 sets. Corona del Mar’s shutout streak might end today, but it’s unlikely the Sea Kings will be challenged. Calabasas edged North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 10-8, in the semifinals and the Coyotes simply don’t have the talent to deal with Orange County’s top-ranked team.

Laguna Beach (15-6) vs. Los Angeles Marlborough (17-1)

1 p.m.

CLAREMONT CLUB

Laguna Beach can win its third consecutive Division V title and sixth section championship in nine years. From 1992 to 1994, the Artists won Division II titles. Marlborough made its own history simply by reaching the finals. The girls’ tennis team became the first program in the school’s 112-year history to reach a section final. The third-seeded Mustangs are led by Yelena Olshanskaya, ranked third in Southern California in the girls’ 14s. Marlborough will have a hard time competing with Laguna Beach, which tied Beverly Hills in games and finished second in the county’s toughest tennis league.
