Moorpark Women Fire First Volley

Carina Nusinov had 17 kills and Moorpark College defeated Cypress, 15-6, 11-15, 15-6, 15-11, in the first round of the women’s volleyball state playoffs on Tuesday at Moorpark.

Outside hitters Nusinov and Toni-Ann Merendino helped the Raiders (20-1) dominate at the net.

Merendino, a Calabasas High graduate, had 13 kills and 19 digs.

Shannon Keller had 48 assists for Moorpark, which plays the winner of the Pasadena-Orange Coast match Saturday.

Ventura def. Canyons, 15-12, 15-8, 15-6--The Pirates advanced with a first-round victory at Ventura.

Sharon Foster of Canyons (18-7) had 10 kills and 13 digs, and Gina Casillas added 11 kills.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Santa Barbara 89, Canyons 78--Nana Gbewonyo had 21 points and 15 rebounds, but the Cougars were outscored, 17-6, in overtime in a nonconference game at Canyons.

Canyons led by six with three minutes left in regulation, but Santa Barbara capitalized on six turnovers by the Cougars down the stretch.

Jerome Edwards had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars.

Antelope Valley 82, Long Beach 71--Jimmy White was four of four from three-point range and finished with 25 points for the Marauders in a nonconference victory at Long Beach (4-3).

Roger Price added 16 points and Antelope Valley (3-3) made 53.3% of its shots.

Long Beach made only 36.7%.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pierce 59, Citrus 52--The Brahmas led the nonconference game at Pierce, 51-31, with 10 minutes remaining when Pierce Coach Jim Couch pulled all of his starters except for Kaleen Clinton.

Clinton finished with 15 points, including one three-point basket, and Alma Ibarra scored 14 for the Brahmas (2-2).

Kumi Yamasaki scored 14 for Citrus (1-4).

Glendale 48, El Camino 45--Allison Gonsalves made two free throws with six seconds left and the Vaqueros won a nonconference game at El Camino.

Marilyn Dubon scored 20 points and Sirushi Demirchyan added 11 for Glendale (2-3).

Canyons 92, Santa Barbara 68--Vonetta Lanier made nine of 13 shots and finished with 19 points in a nonconference victory at Canyons.

Kristie Umemoto made all four of her three-point attempts and scored 12 points for Canyons (4-1). Briana Kentfield had six points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Master’s 83, Fresno Pacific 71--Erin Buescher scored 29 points, Karen Gormley added 17 and the Mustangs won a nonconference game at Canyons.

Buescher also had 15 rebounds for Master’s (4-2).
