Top-Seeded Tartans Upset in Division V

Kassie Petty had 28 kills and 20 digs as Escondido Calvin Christian shocked top-seeded St. Margaret’s, 15-12, 15-12, 15-13, in the Division V girls’ volleyball state tournament Tuesday night.

Calvin Christian, seeded eighth, stunned host St. Margaret’s by winning the first game and the Tartans never recovered.

St. Margaret’s, which defeated Pasadena Poly Saturday to win the Southern Section Division V-AA title, finished the season 30-2. Calvin Christian is 19-9.

In Division I first-round matches:

Chula Vista Bonita Vista 3, Mater Dei 1--Jennifer Saleaumua had 36 kills and five blocks as undefeated Chula Vista Bonita Vista defeated Mater Dei, 15-4, 8-15, 15-8, 15-11, in a Division I match at Bonita Vista.

Bonita Vista won the first game easily, but Mater Dei gained momentum back in the second. The Monarchs jumped out to a 8-2 lead and held Bonita Vista off to win its only game of the match.

Bonita Vista dominated the third game, scoring the first 13 points. Mater Dei had chances to get back into the match in the fourth game, tying Bonita Vista twice, the last time at 11-11, but Bonita Vista scored the final four points, the last two on Saleaumua kills.

Mater Dei finishes the season 30-7.

Clovis Buchanan 3, San Clemente 0--Buchanan jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first game and were really never threatened by the visiting Tritons in a 15-1, 15-7, 15-10 win.

The first game took only 15 minutes and 23 serves to complete as Buchanan went on an 8-0 run to close it out.

San Clemente led, 5-4, in the second game, but Buchanan scored eight of the next nine points to take a 12-6 lead. Laura Heyne, who led Buchanan with 14 kills, had three of her kills in the run. Heyne finished with seven kills in the game.

Katy Daly led San Clemente with 10 kills. Christine Vick added five. The Tritons, who lost to Long Beach Poly in the Division I-AA final last Saturday, finish the season with a 24-3 record. Buchanan is 27-1.
