Much has been made of the fact Kyle Matter has been sacked more times than any previous Hart quarterback.

But opposing quarterbacks have had their share of nightmares against the Indians’ record-setting defense, too.

Hart has 17 interceptions and 43 sacks.

Entering tonight’s Division III quarterfinal against Crescenta Valley (10-1), Matt Moore has intercepted seven passes, tied for the school record.

Lineman Peter Dubsky, who has 14 sacks this season, needs one to tie the career mark of 37 set by George Kase, who played at UCLA.

It’s been a good year for senior linebackers in the Foothill League.

Colin MacNeil of Canyon and Jared DePaiva of Saugus drew raves from opposing coaches and were considered among the region’s best.

Kyle Hollis of Hart has also had a strong season but is often overlooked because the Indians have so many standouts on defense.

“Because of that, Kyle gets put on the back burner,” Coach Mike Herrington said of Hollis, who is second on the team with 70 tackles. “He is the centerpiece of our defense and leads us.”

Antelope Valley’s strong defense will be bolstered with the addition of linebacker Mark Sutton tonight against St. Francis in a Division III quarterfinal.

Sutton, who played for the Antelopes (10-1) as a sophomore, was a force at Sylmar last season but was asked not to return to the team.

Sutton returned to Antelope Valley several weeks ago and began practicing last week. As of Wednesday, he was on pace to have participated in the required 10 practices to earn eligibility.

“I’m hoping he gives us a nice little spark,” lineman Brandon Mulvey said.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s tonight in the Antelope Valley and St. Francis Coach Jim Bonds said early this week he was considering bringing portable heaters for the sidelines.

Antelope Valley likes the idea of a cold home-field advantage.

“A lot of interesting things happen around here at this time of year,” Coach Brent Newcomb said.

At least one member of St. Francis’ coaching staff won’t be surprised by the weather.
