Golden West Cruises in Women’s Volleyball

The Golden West women’s volleyball team needed just 43 minutes to sweep visiting Cuesta, 15-1, 15-3, 15-2, in the Southern California playoffs Saturday and advance to the eight-team state tournament in Stockton.

The top-ranked Rustlers, seven-time defending state champions, jumped out to leads of 9-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the third game. Middle blocker Grace Boyd had a match-high eight kills, Raimi Mitchell and Sarah Boogaard each had six kills and Amanda Siler had 22 assists.

Golden West, which has won 88 consecutive matches, starts play in the state tournament Friday.

In the Moorpark men’s basketball tournament:

Irvine Valley 84, San Bernardino Valley 66--Irvine Valley center Mike Ahmad made 11 of 12 field-goal attempts and finished with a game-high 26 points for the Lasers (1-4) in the consolation final.

In other men’s basketball:

Santa Ana 106, Allan Hancock 104 (2 OT)--After Joe Nichols made two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in the second overtime, teammate Zac Fray grabbed the rebound of a Hancock miss to preserve the victory for the Dons (3-1).

Nichols scored a team-high 33 points, Fray had 21 and Terrell Foster had 16. Ralph Holmes, whose 27-foot three-pointer sent the game into overtime, scored 45 points for Hancock (7-2).
