Garden Grove League

Bolsa Grande

Coach: Scott Snyder

1999-2000 record: 23-6

League record: 12-0

Scott Snyder inherits a talented core of returning starters from a team that last season finished unbeaten in league. Guard Omar Amaral and swingmen David Doan and David Chan last season combined to average more than 30 points a game and should be good for even more production this year. Junior forward Adam Godinez and junior guard Thanh Nguyen, both returners, will battle newcomers Paul Bui, Vilakone Visachack, Jimmy Ngo and Sylvester Jefferson to crack the starting lineup.

Garden Grove

Coach: Ken Frank

1999-2000 record: 7-18

League record: 5-7

Coach Ken Frank hopes his Argonauts can reach the playoffs for a second consecutive year, but it will be a tall order with only two returning starters. Senior guard Nick Davis and senior forward Paul Guzman will lead a cast of returners that also includes forwards Steve Sosa and Aaron Sadler along with guards Andy Scimeca and Chad St. Clair. Garden Grove faces the same problem as most of its league brethren in that it doesn’t feature a lot of height. Only three players are 6-0 or taller.

La Quinta

Coach: Jason Carey

1999-2000 record: 7-17

League record: 5-7

Lone returning starter Joe Rogers, a 6-2 senior forward, will need to have an excellent year if the youthful Aztecs are to finish above .500 in league and earn a playoff berth. Ken Do, a 5-7 senior guard, and Quoc Tran, a 6-3 senior center, will be thrust into bigger roles than last season. Newcomer Aaron Sunu, a 6-5 senior forward, will be La Quinta’s go-to guy for points.

Los Amigos

Coach: Don Grable

1999-2000 record: 11-16

League record: 7-5

Jackson Nanthavong and Peter Vu, both third-year varsity players, return to lead a quick and aggressive team that strives to be the defensive gem of league. Nanthavong, a 5-10 senior, returns at point guard, where he started every game the last two seasons and was a first-team all-league selection last year.

Pacifica

Coach: Dave Friedman

1999-2000 record: 13-15

League record: 8-4

Several coaches picked the Mariners as the league favorite, and their prediction has some merit. Pacifica returns three veteran starters in senior swingman Kelly Gurnea and senior guards Rey Santos and Kyle Cooper from a team that reached the second round of the Division II-A playoffs before losing to Laguna Hills. The returning starters are joined by a cast of guards that includes Joel Bruck, Chris Lavin and Jacob Brosseau.

Rancho Alamitos

Coach: Dave Kirksey

1999-2000 record: 12-14

League record: 5-7

Say this much for Coach Dave Kirksey: he has set a realistic goal for the Vaqueros. Kirksey, who expects to start two sophomores, wants Rancho Alamitos to be the most improved team by the end of the season. There’s a lot of room for improvement since the Vaqueros return only one starter, senior guard Scott Frank, and he isn’t exactly an all-star. Frank averaged six points per game last season..

Santiago

Coach: Ramon Potestas

1999-2000 record: 2-24

League record: 1-11

The Cavaliers have a shot at winning a few more games this season behind returning starters Tung Vo, a 5-10 guard, Him Nguyen, a 6-2 forward, and Bee Nguyen, a 5-11 forward. Other returners include centers Anthony Garcia and Chris Hill and guard Tyrone Kendrick.
