Crescenta Valley Starts Fast, Holds On at Finish in Saugus

James Jenkins had 35 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for Crescenta Valley High in a 94-87 victory over Highland on Tuesday night in the first round of the Saugus boys’ basketball tournament.

The Falcons (1-0) built a 14-point halftime lead and held on in the final minutes.

Jimmy Goffredo made five of eight three-point shots and finished with 30 points, six assists and five rebounds, and Chris Tarne had 16 points and 14 assists for Crescenta Valley.

In other Saugus tournament games:

Buena 76, Verdugo Hills 51--Matt Colton had 20 points and 17 rebounds for Buena.

Roosevelt Bolden added 14 points, eight assists and four steals for Buena (1-0).

Leon Usher, a transfer from Canoga Park, made three three-point shots and finished with 19 points for Verdugo Hills.

Oxnard 87, Glendale 56--Nicolas Curtis had 29 points and 11 rebounds, Erik Webb had 14 points and Jonathan Davis had 12 assists for the Yellowjackets (1-0).

Saugus 96, Van Nuys 55--Marc Holmquist had 14 points, seven assists and four steals, Bradford Sayer had 17 points and Kevin Valle added 15 points off the bench for the Centurions (1-0).

In a nonleague opener:

Oaks Christian 75, West Valley Christian 43--Sophomore Aron Cline scored 21 points, making all five of his three-point shots, to lead the Lions to a victory at Oaks Christian.

Sean Cline had 16 points and nine rebounds for Oaks Christian (1-0).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Taft 62, Hoover 18--Christina Aguinaga hit five of six three-point shots and finished with 22 points in her first game for Taft in a first-round game of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Aguinaga, a senior transfer from El Camino Real, had five steals.

Schquay Brignac added 10 points and Denisha McCoy scored eight for Taft (1-0), ranked No. 9 in the region by The Times.

Hart 52, Glendale 36--The Indians built a 13-point halftime lead and coasted to a nonleague victory at Hart.

Phaedra Miller had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Amanda Patton added 14 points for the Indians (1-0).
