El Segundo 45, Western 44--Rosa Barrera scored 16 points and Yuki Jones had 12 for the Pioneers (0-2), whose fourth-quarter comeback bid fell short. Western plays Aliso Niguel Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Santiago 35, Northwood 31--Sophomore point guard Evelyn Gomez had six points, six assists and 12 rebounds and Barbara Sualua had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavaliers (1-0). In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Capistrano Valley 2, Murrieta Valley 1--Capistrano Valley’s John Fincher scored on a cross from Jeff Serafini in the second half to break the tie. Serafini scored a first-half goal for the Cougars (1-0).

Mater Dei 4, Century 0--Randy Poggio, Juan Gutierrez, Brian Orue and Matt Fennell scored goals and Ruben Rosales had two assists for Mater Dei (1-0).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Brethren Christian 3, Western 2--Sophomores Angela Calvillo, Allison Sarell and Jen Byrne scored for Brethren Christian.

Laguna Beach 2, Laguna Hills 1--Katie Roark scored with an assist from Scarlett Harwood in the game’s final minute for the Artists (1-0). Harwood scored Laguna Beach’s first goal in the first half.

Newport Harbor 2, Edison 1--After the Chargers’ Jane Wyche broke a scoreless tie 17 minutes into the second half, Newport Harbor (1-0) responded with goals by Laura Cauth and Amy Burlingham, who scored the game-winner with one minute left to play. Newport Harbor is 2-0.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

El Dorado 6, Long Beach Poly 5--El Dorado led, 6-2, before visiting Poly made a brief run. Karly Tivenan and Ashley Reta scored two goals each for the Golden Hawks (1-0).

Katella 9, Buena Park 7--Krista Wirthgen scored five goals and teammate Christina Sanchez had four for the host Knights (1-0), who never trailed.
