Volleyball Players Thrive Back East

Share

Several former Orange County high school standouts made an impact in women’s volleyball this season on the East Coast.

Senior Shana Barnnert (Newport Harbor High), junior Kim Frederick (El Modena) and sophomore Lauren Belcher (Edison) helped Manhattan College of New York to its best record in school history. The Jaspers finished 23-11 and advanced to the championship game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, where they were defeated by Fairfield.

Frederick was selected to the All-MAAC second team. Belcher joined Frederick on the league’s all-academic team.

Krista Dill, a middle blocker at Duke who played on two state championship teams at Newport Harbor High, was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s all-freshman team. Dill led the ACC in attack percentage. Duke (21-12) plays Arizona State (17-11) Friday in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs. It is Duke’s first appearance in the tournament since 1994.

Princeton’s Kellie Cramm, a freshman outside hitter from Laguna Beach High, was named Rookie of the Year in the Ivy League. Cramm finished the season with a strong performance at the league tournament, where she had 52 kills and only nine errors in 121 attempts. She averaged 4.73 kills and 3.27 digs during the tournament. Princeton (20-8) plays Nebraska (28-0) in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs.

Princeton outside hitter Sabrina King (Santa Margarita) and Columbia middle blocker Kathy Lavold (Newport Harbor) were first-team All-Ivy selections. Harvard outside hitter Erin Denniston (Woodbridge) made the second team.

Former Mater Dei setter Jennifer Ward, a freshman at Georgetown, was a unanimous pick to the Big East all-rookie team. Ward averaged 11.96 assists.

Former Villa Park High defender Leah Sims of Cal State Fullerton and former Esperanza midfielder Caitlyn Murphy of Long Beach State earned honorable mention.

Matt Hall, who graduated from San Clemente High in 1997, was a leader on the Azusa Pacific men’s soccer team that posted a 17-2-1 record and won the Golden State Athletic Conference Title. Hall missed four games because of injury and was second on the team in assists. He scored Azusa Pacific’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Westmont in the NAIA Western Regional final. He is a two-time NAIA Academic All-American.

Mark Oehlman, formerly of Woodbridge, was recently selected to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer team. He was Westmont’s leading scorer.
