German Leads La Quinta Past Bolsa Grande

La Quinta needed a victory to stay in contention in the Garden Grove League and for a playoff spot. Running back Elijah German provided all the scoring needed as La Quinta escaped with a 14-6 victory against Bolsa Grande Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.

German carried the ball 14 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns for La Quinta (3-4, 2-2).

Bolsa Grande (0-7, 0-3) was hurt by turnovers and penalties. In the second quarter, La Quinta defensive back Vu Nguyen recovered a fumble by quarterback Alex Guadarrama on the Bolsa Grande 30-yard line. German later scored from four yards. His run for a two-point conversion gave La Quinta an 8-0 lead with 8:37 left in the half.

Two Bolsa Grande scoring attempts failed late in the second quarter. Guadarrama’s 10-yard run to the end zone was called back because of holding. The Matadors’ subsequent 42-yard field goal attempt by Daniel Pineda was blocked as time ran out to end the half.

Bolsa Grande finally got on the board when James Bui scored the team’s only touchdown on a two-yard run with 11:01 left to play. A two-point conversion failed.

German scored on a four-yard run with 2:24 left to play. La Quinta put the game away when Giai Do intercepted a pass from Guadarrama with 1:24 left in the game.
