A LITTLE HISTORY

1978--With four leagues in the county carrying eight schools apiece, the creation of the Sea View League eased some of the pressure. Competing in the first season were Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, El Toro, Estancia, Irvine and University, with Corona del Mar and Costa Mesa tying for the championship.

1985--Quarterback Shane Foley of Newport Harbor came up with the kind of finish around which prep legends are built, when the Sailors met co-favorite Saddleback in a midseason game. First, he led a drive from Newport Harbor’s four-yard line with under five minutes to play, capped by Sterling Coberly’s 42-yard field goal. Then he intercepted a pass in the final minute to preserve the 24-21 victory. But after the two schools tied for the league championship, Saddleback went on to win the Central Conference title.

1999 IN REVIEW

Another year, another championship: Newport Harbor extended the Sea View League’s streak of consecutive years with a Southern Section champion to eight, completing an unbeaten season with the Division VI title. To do so, the Sailors had to twice get by Irvine, once for the league title and once in the section championship game . . . . Andre Stewart ran for a pair of touchdowns and Newport Harbor blocked a field goal midway through the fourth quarter to defeat Irvine, 12-10, during Week 6. Eight weeks later, Andy Kalanz scored on a four-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter to give the Sailors a 19-18 victory in the championship game. . . . Stewart, who rushed for 2,380 in 14 games--including 855 yards in four playoff games--was named the offensive player of the year. Mike Patterson, an Irvine linebacker, was tops on defense. . . . Stewart was killed in a car crash on May 14. . . . Laguna Hills and Aliso Niguel, each in its first year in the league, made the playoffs, losing in the first round.

Every team in this league won a Southern Section title in the 1990s. . . . Godfrey Young and Peter Abe provided Irvine with strong running backs before David Doomey transferred back to Irvine. Doomey--who can also play defense and kick--rushed for 1,149 yards and 13 touchdowns for Irvine when it won the league title in 1998. Last year with Santa Margarita, he rushed only six times for eight yards and scored twice. Irvine Coach Terry Henigan said Doomey will rush more than six times this season. “He’s the the wild card,” Henigan said. . . . Aliso Niguel Coach Joe Wood said his Wolverines have the most talent they have had at the skill positions since 1996’s Division VIII championship team. . . . Richard Ahn is the only defensive player for Irvine who is over 200 pounds. The lineman is 5-9, 220. . . . Newport Harbor defensive end Ian Banigan and offensive tackle Scott Lopez are transfers from Santa Margarita. . . . Woodbridge was ranked No. 4 last season through four weeks. Then, the Warriors’ 17-game win streak ended with a last-minute loss to Orange Lutheran, 20-17. “That actually shook us a little bit,” Coach Rick Gibson said. So much that Woodbridge lost four of its last five.
