Sunny Hills’ Slip-Ups Help La Serna Win

Whittier La Serna capitalized on two Sunny Hills’ miscues in the first quarter and went on to win, 26-0, Thursday night at California High School.

La Serna running back Ryan Davies returned the game’s opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, giving the hosts a 7-0 lead. Sunny Hills fumbled the ball away on its third play from scrimmage. Five plays later, Davies raced in from eight yards to give La Serna a 14-0 lead.

Sunny Hills Coach David Fenstermaker said the worst thing his football team could do was fall behind early.

“We’re coming off a season where this team lost its last eight games,” Fenstermaker said. “After two minutes of this game, we’re already down by 14 points. I think after we watch the films we’ll see that we made about 30 mistakes. You can’t play like that and beat good teams.’

Both defenses stiffened in the second quarter and La Serna maintained its 14-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, La Serna put together a 13-play, 82-yard scoring drive that put the game out of reach.

Davies culminated the drive with a five-yard touchdown run, his third of the game. He finished with 91 yards rushing in 19 carries.

The one bright spot for Sunny Hills was the running of Kaleo Igarta, who rushed for 64 yards in 18 carries.
