Channel Islands 10, Harvard-Westlake 6--Fulfilling Coach Donnie Rea’s plea to play hard from start to finish, the surprising Raiders used strong defense to give Rea a victory in his debut at Valley College.

Augie Castaneda rushed for 89 yards in nine carries and scored for Channel Islands on a 36-yard run with 6:40 left in the second quarter to put his team on top, 7-6.

Channel Islands, which was 2-9 last season and lost to Harvard-Westlake, 40-14, relied heavily on the play of 6-foot-3, 270-pound tackle Jordan Knisley, who had a sack, recovered a fumble and opened holes as a blocker.

Freshman Mike Berrelleza made the most important play, intercepting a pass by Richard Irvin on the Harvard-Westlake 20 and returning it to the 12 with 2:37 left. It set up a 24-yard field goal by David Herrera.

Harvard-Westlake, making its debut under Coach Chris Johnson, had several outstanding individual performances, but repeated illegal procedure penalties, two fumbles and the interception bogged down its offense.

Irvin, a sophomore, missed on his first six passes, then completed 11 of his next 15 for 204 yards in the first half. He also scored a touchdown.

The Wolverines’ offense couldn’t move the ball when Irvin was benched for the first two series of the second half after he felt groggy following a hit.

Irvin never regained his first-half effectiveness, finishing 15 of 30 for 274 yards.

Aaron Alexander-Bloch of Harvard-Westlake caught six passes for 103 yards, recovered a fumble and twice threw Raiders for losses.

Robert Lowenthal kept the Wolverines close by stopping Tommy Menga on a fourth-and-goal run from the one-yard line with 3:37 left in the second quarter.
