Cougars Living Up to Promise

Capistrano Valley Coach Jeff Veeder has been telling people that his football team is vastly improved over last year’s 2-8 squad. Judging by Friday’s 25-13 victory over Aliso Niguel, that boast might be right.

Capistrano Valley quarterback David Frazeur made his first start a memorable one, throwing for 185 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard pass play to running back Travis Bectel on the Cougars’ opening drive.

Frazeur’s second touchdown pass sealed the Cougars’ victory. It came on a one-yard pass to Ryan Perkovich on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Aliso Niguel (0-2) tied the score 13-13 midway through the second quarter on a two-yard run by Devon Sutton. The Wolverines also got field goals of 22 and 32 yards by kicker Stephen Berneking in the first half.

Following his long pass play to Bectel, Frazeur, a junior, scored on a 23-yard run on a fourth down play with 2:44 left in the first quarter.

Bectel put the game out of reach with 10:53 remaining in the game on a three yard run. Bectel ran for 82 yards in 19 carries. Frazeur also had a productive game on the ground, running for 56 yards in nine carries.

Sutton was a bright spot in an otherwise tough game for the Wolverine offense, leading all rushers with 110 yards in 20 carries.
