Late Touchdown Lifts Bell-Jeff to 21-14 Victory Over Chadwick

Steve Slaughter scored on a two-yard run with 1:49 remaining to give Bell-Jeff High a 21-14 victory over Chadwick in an opener on Saturday at Redondo High.

Quarterback Rene Garcia ran for a seven-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and added an 11-yard touchdown pass to Armando Jacobo late in the third quarter to tie the score, 14-14.

Dennis Webber gave Chadwick a 7-6 first-quarter lead with a 91-yard kickoff return after Garcia’s touchdown.

In other openers:

Pasadena Marshall 22, Vasquez 0--It was a disappointing debut for Coach Doug Miller of the Mustangs, who were held to 82 yards in a nonleague game at Marshall High.

Luca Spigno completed only four of 16 passes for 31 yards with one interception for Vasquez. He was sacked three times.

Jay Wilson of Vasquez had 47 yards rushing in 14 carries. Tony Uedelhardt made three receptions for 29 yards.

Don Daniels rushed for 112 yards in 22 carries and Marcel Branch finished with 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Marshall, 0-10 last season.

Daniels returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

The Eagles finished with 257 total yards, including 210 rushing.

EIGHT-MAN

Grace Brethren 35, Shandon 14--Josh Mathieu rushed for 65 yards and three touchdowns in 11 carries and scored on an 11-yard pass from Nick Larsen for the Lancers at Grace Brethren.

Larsen completed seven of 10 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions.

Steve McClain scored on a 76-yard pass play and Mathieu had four receptions for 62 yards.

Lancaster Bethel Christian 54, Las Vegas Calvary Chapel 20--Lionel Mongiano had 20 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns for Bethel Christian at Lancaster.

Mongiano also had two touchdowns on kick returns.
