Laguna Beach Upsets Sailors in Volleyball

Unranked Laguna Beach upset fifth-ranked Newport Harbor, 4-1, in girls’ volleyball Tuesday night.

Laguna Beach (1-0) defeated the visiting Sailors, 15-10, 15-6, 12-15, 15-6. Sarah Salem had 17 kills and Cassie Jones had 12 for the Artists. Taylor Govaars had 10 kills for Newport Harbor (0-1).

In other nonleague volleyball:

No. 1 Mater Dei 3, Costa Mesa 0--Ashley Bayer had nine kills and Shannon Hopkins added eight kills and seven digs as Mater Dei won, 15-4, 15-6, 15-9.

No. 8 Corona del Mar 3, Calvary Chapel 0--Senior Lindsay Anstandig had six kills and five aces to help Corona del Mar to the 15-2, 15-9, 15-4 victory.

Bolsa Grande 3, Santa Ana Valley 2--Amy Dabalack had 12 kills, Angela Tafaoga had 10 and Michelle Day had 47 assists for host Bolsa Grande (1-1), in a 5-15, 15-11, 9-15, 15-10, 15-2, come-from-behind victory.

Villa Park 3, Cypress 1--Crystal Tinoco had 12 kills and 14 digs and Amy Sarkaria had nine kills and six blocks for host Villa Park (3-3), which won, 12-15, 16-14, 15-7, 15-10.

Fullerton 3, Savanna 0--Senior Ashley Sutherland had 16 kills as Fullerton (2-0) won, 15-9, 15-1, 15-13.

In nonleague boys’ cross-country:

Capistrano Valley Christian 19, Tarbut V’ Torah 38--Capistrano Valley Christian’s James Pierce ran the 3.1-mile Mason Park course in 20:08 to finish first.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

No. 2 Villa Park 127, Dana Hills 127 (Villa Park wins on tie-breaker)--Beth Gates holed out a 60-yard shot on the final hole to tie the score 127-127, then the Spartans won in a tiebreaker based on fourth-player score.

Gates hit a sand wedge from the fairway to set up the tiebreaker, and Megan Schindelbeck’s score of 50 won it for the Spartans (1-0) at Tustin Ranch. Dana Hills’ Carling Cho was the medalist, shooting a three-over 39. Villa Park’s Shelly Raworth had 40.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Newport Harbor 3, Edison 0--Lauren Birchfield, Chanelle Sladies and Elizabeth Evans all scored for visiting Newport Harbor (2-0).
