Sunny Hills Freshman Tops Field

Sunny Hills’ Claire Kim won both the freshman and overall girls’ titles at the Sunny Hills Invitational cross-county meet Saturday, covering the three-mile course at Clark Park in Buena Park in 18:59.
Diana Hossfeld of Corona del Mar finished first at the senior level with a time of 19:02, helping the Sea Kings to the team title with a combined time of 98:32. Raemon Rodriguez, a Marina senior, was the overall boys’ winner, recording a time of 15:37. Bellflower St. John Bosco had the best boys’ team time at 82:53, followed by Valencia at 83:43.
In the championship game of the Pomona girls’ volleyball tournament:
Aliso Niguel 3, Pomona 0--Ashley Griggs had 12 kills, Kelly Meckel had nine and Julia Peterson had 33 assists to lead the Wolverines (4-0) to a 15-6, 15-9, 15-5 victory in the title match.
In the Long Beach Millikan boys’ water polo tournament:
North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 8, No. 10 Los Alamitos 5--Eric Geoffroy scored three goals for Los Alamitos in its championship game loss.
In a semifinal, Los Alamitos defeated Irvine, 11-2, after running up a 10-0 lead.
Huntington Beach 9, Burbank Burroughs 5--Bob Meripol had four goals and Mike Sullivan scored three for Huntington Beach (1-4), which scored four fourth-quarter goals to win the consolation game.
Palos Verdes Peninsula Chadwick 11, Marina 8--Mike Alvino scored three goals to lead Marina (2-3) in a consolation game.
In nonleague games:
Coronado 9, No. 1 Newport Harbor 8--Thomas Hopkins scored four goals, including the game-winner with 23 seconds to play for host Coronado.
Peter Belden had three goals, and Ryan Cook and Kyle Bean had two each for Newport Harbor.
Santa Barbara 9, No. 8 Esperanza 7--Brian Rock scored three goals and Tyler Morales scored two for Esperanza. The score was tied, 7-7, with three minutes to play, but Santa Barbara scored twice to pull ahead. Brian Ricci made 12 saves for Esperanza (2-2).
