SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Ruben Torres scored three touchdowns to lead Katella to 22-6 victory over Sunny Hills Friday night at Buena Park High.

Torres, who accounted for 199 yards in 33 carries in the first two games, was once again the workhorse of the Knight offense, rushing for 249 yards in 32 carriers as Katella won its first game of the season.

Sunny Hills (0-3) controlled the tempo for most of the first half. The Lancers had a scoring opportunity stopped after advancing to the Knight 20 in the first quarter. A bobbled center snap on a field goal try stopped a second chance.

Sunny Hills took a 6-0 lead with five minutes, 17 seconds left in the second quarter when Matt Migliorini made a one-hand catch of a Nick Rodriguez pass en route to a 42-yard touchdown play. The extra point failed.

Katella (1-2) struck back quickly, thanks to a 62-yard run by Torres, who was tackled by Ryan Mansfield on the Lancer 6. Torres scored on the following play and DrewZinser made his first of two conversions to give the Knights a 7-6 lead.

A heavy mist hindered a scoring opportunity for the Knights when a slippery ball caused two consecutive fumbled center snaps on the Katella five.

The next time Katella received the ball Torres took it 35 yards for a touchdown to increase the Knight lead to 14-6.

Katella capped a 12-play drive early in the fourth quarter with an 18-yard touchdown run by Torres. The center snap was off target, but holder Andre Huseman alertly grabbed the ball for a two-point conversion pass to Bryce Tackett.

Chris Haller, who missed the first two games because of a bad ankle, returned at quarterback. Haller hit four of 12 passes for 31 yards but more importantly did not tosses an interception.
