UCI Gets Baseball Recruit

Gregg Wallis can say, for now anyway, he is a one-man team.

The Chatsworth High second baseman made history of sorts Monday when he became the first player to commit to play for Coach John Savage for UC Irvine’s resurrected baseball team in 2002.

A left-handed batter, Wallis batted .389 as a junior, Chatsworth Coach Tom Meusborn said.

Wallis said that he was impressed with Savage and his staff after meeting with them. “They showed a lot of confidence in what they want their program to be,” Wallis said. “It’s a great opportunity for me. That’s how I’m looking at it.”

Irvine dropped baseball eight years ago for financial reasons, but is restoring the program after students voted to add on fees that go toward new facilities and athletic programs.
