San Clemente Rallies to Beat Los Alamitos in Water Polo

San Clemente, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, rallied from a three-goal deficit at halftime to defeat sixth-ranked Los Alamitos, 9-7, in a nonleague boys’ water polo game Tuesday at San Clemente.

The Griffins, playing without their leading scorer, Erik Geoffroy (51 goals), who was serving a one-game disciplinary suspension, took a 6-3 lead at the half. But the Tritons scored three goals in the third to tie the score at 7-7.

Pat McCann gave the Tritons the lead for good, scoring with 41 seconds remaining. McCann, Josh Hewko and Robert Yeilding each scored three goals for the Tritons (7-1).

Kevin Bradley had three goals for Los Alamitos (7-7).

In other nonleague games:

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 5, No. 4 Foothill 4--Foothill couldn’t convert two open shots late in the game, including one that hit the crossbar, and lost to Harvard-Westlake, the No. 3 team in Division I.

Brian Alexander scored with 2:04 remaining to draw the Knights, ranked sixth in Division I, to within 5-4.

No. 8 Santa Margarita 12, Mission Viejo 10--Keith Files scored late in the fourth quarter to break a 10-10 tie for Santa Margarita (11-3).

No. 7 Servite 10, La Verne Bonita 7--Vincent Bevins scored seven goals for the Friars (6-2), who trailed by one at halftime. Bonita is 6-2.

University 13, Edison 6--Ted Peck scored four goals for host University (7-4), which scored six goals in the third quarter.

No. 2 Villa Park 16, Trabuco Hills 5--T.J. Matijevich scored six goals and Charlie Fisher had five for the visiting Spartans (6-2).

In Sunset League field hockey:

Huntington Beach 1, Glendora 0--Natalie Norus scored off an assist from Lauren Santiago in the first half for host Huntington Beach (4-0-2).

In Sea View League golf:

Newport Harbor 131, No. 3 Irvine 135--Newport Harbor (3-0, 1-0) survived two shots in the water on the ninth hole to win. Medalist Stella Lee shot par 36 at Oak Creek for Irvine (3-2, 0-1).

Kelly Hunt shot a 40 for the Sailors.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

No. 7 Canyon 11, Rosary 7--Canyon (6-1) got sweeps from Tracy Lin and Elizabeth Ferris in singles. Rosary is 4-5.

Capistrano Valley 11, No. 6 University 7--Lauren Jones won in singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, for the host Cougars (5-3).

No. 2 Dana Hills 13, Laguna Beach 5--Dana Hills’ Catie Reames and Kristin Bronowicki won in doubles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, as the Dolphins improved to 4-0.

Irvine 9, Foothill 9 (Irvine wins on games, 82-73)--Cami Jung and Tiffany Thair won 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in doubles for host Irvine (2-5).

Mater Dei 12, No. 10 Villa Park 6--Freshman Carolina Velasco won two of three sets and the doubles team of Casey Knutson and Jodi Nygaard swept for the Monarchs (3-1). Villa Park is 2-4.

No. 4 Woodbridge 15, Northwood 3--Senior Elizabeth Lingman swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for host Woodbridge (4-2).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

No. 2 Mater Dei 3, No. 9 Los Alamitos 2--Katie Kahlweiss had 19 kills and 24 digs and Whitney Pavlik added 18 kills for Mater Dei (4-0), which won, 16-14, 12-15, 15-9, 13-15, 15-8. The Monarchs played without Breegan Mulligan, who was out with a foot injury.

Drue Wawrzynski had 24 kills for Los Alamitos (5-3).

No. 4 Huntington Beach 3, No. 6 Corona del Mar 0--Jennifer Gardikas had 14 kills as host Huntington Beach (3-2) won, 15-12, 15-9, 15-7. Corona del Mar is 1-2.

Esperanza 3, No. 8 La Habra 2--Sarah Engle had 13 kills and 64 assists Jenny Brickner had 12 kills and Kristy Chester had 11 as the host Aztecs (3-2) won, 12-15, 9-15, 18-16, 15-12, 15-2. La Habra is 5-3.

No. 5 Irvine 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Olivia Waldowski had 14 kills for visiting Irvine (4-1), which won, 15-3, 9-15, 15-9, 15-4.

Kennedy 3, Villa Park 2--Brittany Jensen had 15 kills for Kennedy (2-2), which won, 3-15, 15-10, 15-4, 12-15, 15-5.

Pacifica 3, Downey Warren 1--Shannon Ladd had 24 kills and Dana Larson had 23 as Pacifica (3-1) won, 15-8, 11-15, 17-15, 15-12.
