SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Freddy Keiaho rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns, and Buena High held off Camarillo, 34-26, in a nonleague game Friday before about 2,500 at Camarillo High.

Each team scored 20 points in a wild fourth quarter, with Camarillo running back Loren Cerny playing a key role, but as a passer.

Two plays after Keiaho ran 38 yards for a touchdown to give Buena (3-1) a 21-12 lead with 9:08 to play, Cerny took a pitch from Mike Jasper and threw a long pass that Justin Peterson caught at midfield and carried to the end zone for an 80-yard touchdown.

Buena responded with a nine-play, 77-yard drive, capped by Andrew Paulson’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Danny Robledo.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the touchdown resulted in a failed 35-yard point-after kick, giving Buena a 27-19 lead with 3:58 to play.

Three plays later, Cerny took another pitch and threw back across the field for Jasper. But cornerback Garrett Oltz made an interception and ran 44 yards for a touchdown that gave the Bulldogs a 34-19 lead with 2:50 play.

Cerny scored from one yard with 20 seconds to play to cut the deficit to 34-26, but the Scorpions’ onside kick went out of bounds.

Buena out-gained Camarillo, 500 yards to 261.

In the first half, Buena had a 256-111 advantage in yards, but led only 7-6 at the half. Buena lost two fumbles in Camarillo territory and Richard Martinez missed a 37-yard field goal with 14 seconds left.

“We’re young on offense and inexperienced in a few positions,” Coach Rick Scott of Buena said. “We need to stop making mistakes.”

Camarillo (2-2) struck first, scoring on its first play from scrimmage on a 59-yard touchdown pass play from Jasper to Peterson for a 6-0 lead.

Buena needed only six plays to march 66 yards, capping the drive with Paulson’s nine-yard scoring pass to Oltz for a 7-6 lead.

Cerny rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns in 19 carries. Peterson had five receptions for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

Paulson completed 13 of 17 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Keiaho rushed for 154 yards in the first half, and had 11 gains of at least nine yards in the game.

Buena lost three fumbles in Camarillo territory.
