Santa Ana Mater Dei running backs Camron Carmona and Darius Williams each rushed for more than 100 yards and the Monarch defense stifled Huntington Beach Edison running back Darryl Poston in a 42-10 nonleague victory Friday night at Orange Coast College.

Carmona rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns in 12 carries and Williams added 104 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries for the Monarchs (3-1), who amassed 449 yards of total offense to 255 for Edison (3-1).

The Monarch defense limited Poston to 63 yards in 20 carries. Poston scored the Chargers’ touchdown on a 71-yard reception from Richard Schwartz early in the fourth quarter.

Mater Dei’s biggest stand came late in the third quarter with the game relatively close. Edison had a first-and-goal at the Monarch one-yard line with a chance to cut its deficit to 11 points.

But Poston lost two yards, Schwartz threw two incomplete passes and was sacked on fourth down by linebacker Ian Gunderman.

Mater Dei quarterback Matt Leinart, who passed for 401 yards in Mater Dei’s 31-28 loss to Concord De La Salle last week, struggled after he was hit in the shoulder on the last play of the first quarter.

Leinart, who has given an oral commitment to USC, completed nine of 21 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown. He had two passes intercepted.
