Newport Harbor Storms Back for Volleyball Victory

Newport Harbor rallied to defeat Woodbridge, 11-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-12, in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Tuesday at Woodbridge.

Blake Tippett had 34 kills and Gregg Perrine had 24 and Christian Berg-Hansen 20 for the sixth-ranked Sailors (4-4, 2-1).

Scott Sebek had 24 kills and 11 digs to lead the Warriors (4-4, 1-1).

In the Empire League:

Loara 3, Kennedy 2--Ly Nam had a match-high 23 kills for the Saxons (5-4, 2-1), who won, 6-15, 15-10, 11-15, 15-8, 17-15.

Brian Bixby had 16 kills, Nick Nam had 14 and Mark Haas added eight blocks for Kennedy (1-5, 1-2).

In the Serra League:

No. 10 Mater Dei 3, Servite 0--A.J. Croal had 10 kills and Mike Gazzano recorded 38 assists as the Monarchs (5-2, 1-0) won their league opener, 15-11, 15-5, 15-7.

Matt Reynolds had 25 assists for Servite (6-5, 0-1).

At the Orange Lutheran boys’ golf tournament:

Wright leads Brea Olinda--Ryan Wright shot a one-under 70 at Willowick to earn medalist honors and lead Brea Olinda to the team title by five strokes over Irvine. Ryan Sader shot a 71 to tie for second for the Wildcats.

In South Coast League:

No. 5 Capistrano Valley 199, Trabuco Hills 221--Junior Alex Canetti shot one-under 35 and medaled for visiting Capistrano Valley (11-2, 5-1) at Coto de Caza.

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Huntington Beach 191, No. 3 Marina 203--In a competition for first place, medalist Kevin Noble shot par 36 and freshman Joey Benedetti carded a 37 for the Oilers (10-0, 4-0) at SeaCliff.

In Sunset League boys’ swimming:

No. 4 Edison 112, Marina 74--Evan Mitchell recorded a score of 245.00 in the diving competition to defeat Ryan Rincon, last year’s Sunset League champion.

Junior Keith Ryan won the 200 freestyle (1:53.22), the 100 freestyle (51.60) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay, and 400 freestyle relay teams for host Edison (6-0, 2-0).

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

No. 8 Capistrano Valley 88, El Toro 82--With the score tied, 78-78, heading into the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, Capistrano Valley pulled out the victory when junior Kimberlee Frith swam the anchor leg in 54.4 to beat El Toro by only over two seconds.

In Century League boys’ tennis:

No. 8 Canyon 15, Villa Park 3--John Nguyen swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, for Canyon (10-3, 3-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 11, Laguna Beach 7--Last year’s league champions, Peter Kulmaticki and Michael Bean, ran their record to 33-2 this season with a sweep for Corona del Mar (13-0, 6-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 4 Woodbridge 11, Irvine 7--The doubles teams of Justin Mendelson and Bijan Noroozi and A.J. Bertone and Paul Strozier swept their opponents to lead Woodbridge (10-4, 4-0).

In the Serra League:

No. 5 Servite 14, Mater Dei 4--Undefeated Patrick Buchanan swept at No. 1 singles for the visiting Friars (13-0, 6-0.

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Los Alamitos 13, Esperanza 5--In a battle for first place, the No. 2 team of Phil Davidson and George Canete had the only doubles sweep for the host Griffins (9-2, 4-0). Esperanza is 11-2, 4-0.
