Three O.C. Players Chosen for Under-17 Soccer Team

Newport Harbor High’s Tyson Wahl, Woodbridge’s David Chun and Capistrano Valley’s Jordan Harvey have been selected to the final 18-man roster for the U.S. under-17 men’s national soccer team that will compete in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in St. Louis, April 18-22.

Wahl, Chun and Harvey are defenders and are members of the Irvine Strikers club team. The U.S. team will compete in the Group A qualifying tournament at Saint Louis University with Canada, Jamaica and El Salvador. The first-place team advances to the Under-17 World Championship in Trinidad & Tobago in September.

The U.S. team has posted a deceiving 8-7-3 record in 2001, with three losses coming to MLS squads..

TENNIS

Taylor Dent of Newport Beach and Kevin Kim of Fullerton upset second-seeded Paul Kilderry and Luke Smith of Australia, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round of the $25,000 USTA Calabasas Challenger.

Kim and Dent advance to the semifinals, where they will play Cecil Mamiit and Glenn Weiner of the United States or Ota Fukarek of Czechoslovakia and Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland. Kim meets Andre Sa of Brazil today in the singles quarterfinals.

* Former Servite High standout Ryan Moore and his partner at USC, Nick Rainey, have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. national men’s doubles team of the month.

Moore and Rainey went 7-0 in March and climbed 23 spots in the rankings to their current spot at No. 11. The USC duo, which registered three top nine wins in March, is 19-2 this season and has a 13-match win streak. Last season they reached the NCAA doubles final as sophomores.

AWARDS

UC Irvine had six athletes and Cal State Fullerton five named to the All-Academic Big West Conference team for winter sports.

Irvine’s athletes were Aras Baskauskas (basketball), Kevin Olson (swimming), Blair Roberts (swimming), Wendy Gabbe (basketball), Cindy Oparah (basketball), Alssa Klingenberg (swimming) and Sara Showalter (swimming).

Fullerton’s athletes were Allyson Alhadeff (basketball), Kellie Francia (gymnastics), Jennifer Halloran (gymnastics), Joanna Hughes (gymnastics) and Theresa O’Gara (gymnastics).

UC Santa Barbara’s Debby Caine (basketball), who played at San Clemente High School, also was honored.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Larry Whittaker has resigned as girls’ soccer coach at Irvine High, Athletic Director Terry Henigan said Thursday.

Hired before the start of the 1998-99 season, Whittaker had been varsity coach at Victor Valley High.
