Cougars Topple Pacifica in Softball

Brooke Weekley says she likes pressure situations, and the Capistrano Valley sophomore got her fair share Saturday at the Woodbridge Classic softball tournament.

Weekley and her teammates upset third-ranked Pacifica, 5-4, in eight innings at Barber Park in Irvine.

Using international tiebreaker rules, Pacifica put runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but Weekley got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts, her third and fourth of the game.

“I was a little nervous on a few of those,” said Weekley, who improved to 11-1 and ended an 11-game winning streak by Pacifica (12-3).

The Cougars (14-4-1) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. A runner, Meredith Parks, was placed at second base under tiebreaker rules. She took third on a sacrifice bunt, and Pacifica pitcher Kasey Carter (4-2) intentionally walked Weekley after falling behind in the count, 3-1. Carter then walked Alicia Thompson and Danielle Ross, forcing in the winning run.

Capistrano Valley, which will play Kennedy in the third round Monday, took a three-run lead in the third as No. 9 hitter Natalie Vaughn delivered an RBI single, followed by a run-scoring grounder to second base by Parks and an RBI triple by Kristin Timbers.

Pacifica got even in the sixth inning on Mallorie Lenn’s three-run homer.

Capistrano Valley went ahead in the bottom of the sixth, 4-3, as Thompson squeezed home Timbers, who reached base on an error.

Pacifica tied the score at 4-4 in the seventh when Jessica Marical singled home Linda Reyes.
