Amritrajes Advance to Final

Cousins Prakash Amritraj of Encino and Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas defeated Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., and Jonathan Stokke of Hilton Head, S.C., 6-2, 6-2, on Wednesday to advance to the boys’ 18 doubles championship match in the Easter Bowl Classic in Palm Springs.

The Amritrajes face Drew Hoskins of Los Alamitos and Roger Gubser of Laredo, Texas, in the final at 4:30 p.m. today.

“Prakash played brilliantly, and I played nearly as well as I think I can play,” Stephen Amritraj said.

Prakash Amritraj, who played at Harvard-Westlake High but is being home-schooled in his senior year, said he has committed to USC.

Hoskins and Gubser defeated Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks and K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach, 6-4, 6-4, in a semifinal.

TRACK AND FIELD

* John Godina and Seilala Sua top the entries today in the Antelope Valley College Throws Festival.

Godina, a two-time Olympic medalist in the men’s shotput and winner of the World indoor title last month, will compete in the men’s discus.

Sua, the top-ranked women’s discus thrower in the U.S. for the last three seasons, will compete in that event.

The meet consists of competitions in the shotput and discus, and begins at 9:30 a.m. with the invitational men’s shotput.

DIVING

* Brothers Troy and Justin Dumais of Ventura advanced to Saturday’s finals of the men’s 3-meter springboard competition in the U.S. National Indoor Diving Championships at Mabee Memorial Aquatic Center in Midland, Texas.

Troy Dumais, a Texas junior and the NCAA Division I champion on the one- and three-meter springboards, topped the preliminaries with 633.69 points.

Justin Dumais, also a junior at Texas and fourth-place finisher on the three-meter board and fifth-place finisher on the one-meter board at last month’s NCAA championships, scored 579.57 points and qualified third.

The top eight in preliminaries qualified for finals. The top six finishers in the finals will earn spots on the U.S. national team.

SWIMMING

* Olympian Amy Van Dyken will be the keynote speaker for the Conejo Simi Aquatics annual awards banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Vista Hotel in Simi Valley.

Van Dyken was a member of the U.S. 400-meter relay team that won a gold medal and set a world record in 3:36.61 at the Sydney Games last summer. She won four gold medals at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

SOFTBALL

* Sarah Farnworth of Cal State Northridge was selected Big West pitcher of the week.

The senior right-hander from Upland picked up three victories against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Farnworth (16-10) allowed 15 hits and two runs in 21 innings, striking out 13.

BASKETBALL

* George O’Garro, an All-Valley Mission League forward from Sylmar High, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.

BASEBALL

* Center fielder Mike Miller of Hart has committed to Cal State Los Angeles, Coach Jim Ozella said.

Miller is batting .375 with 11 runs batted in.
