Cervenka Pitches a Double Zero for Crescenta Valley

Meredith Cervenka pitched two shutouts and Kaycee Crownover scored three runs Friday as Crescenta Valley High won two games in the Arroyo Grande softball tournament.

Cervenka (16-1) pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Morro Bay in a first-round game, and she pitched another one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over Buena in the second round.

Crownover scored both game-winning runs.

Crescenta Valley (17-1), ranked No. 5 in Southern Section Division II, scored against Buena (11-6) when Crownover led off the seventh inning with a single, moved to second on Kirsten Whitt’s sacrifice and scored on Kris Franks’ single.

Ashley Sarver pitched a five-hitter for Buena.

In the first game, Crownover scored on an error in the second inning to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead, and scored in the seventh on a single by Tammy Labreche.

Christina Grimm pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts for Morro Bay (14-1), ranked No. 7 in Division IV.

Two of Crescenta Valley’s runs were unearned.

The Falcons will play in the semifinals at 9 a.m. today against either Templeton or Montclair Prep.

The championship game is at 11 a.m.

La Canada 2, Pasadena Poly 1--Heather Fowlie’s groundout scored the winning run for the Spartans in the sixth inning of a nonleague game at La Canada.

Kelly Kalish of La Canada (12-1-1) struck out six and allowed two hits in six innings.

Paraclete 7, Tehachapi 0--Sara Gonzales (16-2) had two hits and two RBIs and struck out 10 in a four-hitter for Paraclete (16-2) in a nonleague victory at Jane Reynolds Park in Lancaster. Melissa Little added two hits, including her first home run.

BASEBALL

Hart 12, Canyon 2--Chris Gagnon had four hits and the Indians (19-1, 8-1) hit three home runs in avenging an early week loss to Canyon (10-7-1, 5-4) at Hart.

Nick Enciso had two hits, including a two-run home run. Matt Moore and Chris Giordano each hit home runs. Phil Tognetti (9-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five.

Valencia 9, Saugus 6--Jon Porter hit two home runs, Matt Aidem had a grand slam in the seventh inning and the Vikings (12-8, 5-4) won a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Kyle Wilson also homered and finished with three hits for Valencia.

Lancaster 21, Palmdale 8--Art Ortiz and Jason Anderson homered in a 12-run third inning and Tony Ortiz was four for four with two RBIs for the Eagles (15-4-1, 8-1) in a Golden League victory at Palmdale. Josh Pratt had three hits and Ryan Jefferson added a three-run double and two-run homer for Lancaster.

Tyrone Culver homered for Palmdale (7-8-1, 4-5).

Quartz Hill 8, Antelope Valley 5--Matt Ware’s two-run single highlighted a six-run seventh inning for Quartz Hill (11-8, 7-2) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley (9-10, 4-5).

The Rebels had three singles, a double by Shane Gates and a walk during the rally, and benefited from a passed ball that scored Alex Massari.

Crescenta Valley 11, Pasadena 4--Aaron McGuinness had three hits, including his fifth home run, and drove in two, and Stephen Francisco added two hits for the No. 10 Falcons (14-4, 7-2), who rallied for seven runs in the eighth inning of a Pacific League game at Pasadena.

Hoover 15, Muir 5--Sergio Garcia singled, hit his fifth home run and drove in five for the Tornadoes (7-10, 4-5) in a Pacific League victory at Hoover.

La Canada 8, South Pasadena 0--Junior Matt Cheney (6-1) pitched a no-hitter for the Spartans in a Rio Hondo League game at South Pasadena (8-7, 4-5).

Cheney struck out seven and lost a perfect game when he walked Jim Logan to lead off the fourth.

Will Peniall had two hits, including a two-run double, Jordan Ballard hit a two-run home run and Brian Koidy had a two-run triple for La Canada (13-3, 7-2).

Santa Paula 12, Malibu 4--Jacob Macias hit three home runs and had eight RBIs in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula (9-10, 4-3) called after six innings because of rain.

Macias hit two-run homers in the first and third innings and a grand slam in the sixth.

He flied out deep to left field in his other at-bat.

Hueneme 8, Dana Hills 5--Jaime Martinez’s run-scoring single in the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and the Vikings advanced in pool play of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

Mike Minjares and Juan Landeros had run-scoring singles in the seventh for Hueneme (13-7).

Camarillo 10, University 1--Delmon Young had two hits and two RBIs and Davey Komatsu had two doubles and two RBIs for the Scorpions (17-5) in a Redondo tournament game at University.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Canyons 9, Citrus 2--Dan Champieux had three hits, including his fifth home run, and Josh Robinson singled three times for the Cougars in a Western State Conference South Division victory at Canyons.

Tim Hutting, who homered, and Juan Guerrero each added two hits for the Cougars (14-9, 10-9).

Pierce 5, Valley 1--Phil Polanco allowed two hits and no runs in seven innings and the Brahmas won a WSC Southern Division game at Valley.

Ryan Cope had three hits, including two doubles, for Pierce (22-12, 13-6).

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Redlands 2, Cal Lutheran 0--Nicole Rinetti (8-5), from La Reina High, pitched a three-hitter and Amy Burton had three hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (16-16-1, 12-4), who passed the Regals (13-10, 9-2) for the SCIAC lead at Cal Lutheran.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Taft 67, Cleveland 60--Chris Morgan and Daniel Clements each won two events for the Toreadors (5-0, 4-0), who clinched the West Valley League title at Taft.

Morgan won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.8 and followed with a wind-aided 23-5 to win the long jump.

Clements won the 880-yard run in 1:58.0 and finished first in the two-mile in 10:42.0.
