Adams Provides Scoring Punch

Hassan Adams scored 19 points to help Westchester High defeat Locke, 87-40, Wednesday night at Westchester in a season-opening boys’ basketball game for both teams.

Trevor Ariza had 15 points for the Comets, top-ranked in the nation by USA Today.

Montgomery Montrovan scored 10 points for Locke.

Fremont 98, Pasadena Blair 46--Geoffrey Clayton scored 24 points for Fremont in pool play of its own tournament.

Mark Bradford and Terrell Powell each had 17 points for the Pathfinders (2-0), the sixth-ranked team in the region by The Times.

Fremont opened with a 9-0 run and led, 32-7, after the first quarter.

Darron Brown had 13 points for Fremont.

El Segundo 67, Santa Monica St. Monica 52--Dashawn Strong had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Jeremy Hopson scored 14 points for 20th-ranked El Segundo (6-0) in the El Segundo tournament.

Long Beach Beach Wilson 58, Cerritos Gahr 48--Kevin Crockett scored 23 points for Wilson (3-2) at Gahr (2-3).

In girls’ basketball:

San Clemente 71, Redondo 54--Lindsey Pluimer had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Sara Brown scored 20 points to lead fourth-ranked San Clemente (3-0) in a quarterfinal of the Brea Olinda tournament.

The Tritons held sixth-ranked Redondo (1-1) to a combined 17 points in the second and third quarters, shot 60% from the field and took a 57-34 lead.

Kim Buffum scored 16 points for San Clemente and Ashley Housley scored 12.

Krista Areyan scored 19 points for Redondo and Jennifer Owens had 14 for Redondo (1-1).

Harbor City Narbonne 69, La Jolla Country Day 50--Amber Fouse scored 18 points and Willnett Crockett had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Narbonne (2-0) in a quarterfinal of the Brea Olinda tournament.

The Gauchos, the defending state Division I champions and top-ranked team in the region, never trailed and led, 43-23, at halftime.

In boys’ soccer:

Irvine Woodbridge 5, San Clemente 0--Kevin Long had three goals and an assist as the host Warriors scored five goals in the second half of their season opener.

Eric Ebert and Beckham Thomas also scored for Woodbridge, the top-ranked team in the nation by Student Sports.

Fountain Valley 3, Santa Margarita 0--Sean Iliff scored the first goal off a Drew Tolman assist in the 30th minute. Tolman also scored.

Fountain Valley (4-0) knocked off The Times’ second-ranked team.

Santa Margarita is 2-1.
