MVP Pruitt Leads Centennial to Title

Gabriel Pruitt had 25 points and seven assists and earned most-valuable-player honors in leading Compton Centennial past Long Beach Poly, 78-70, in the Gold Division championship of the Modesto Christian boys’ basketball tournament Saturday night.
Compton Centennial (11-0), No. 12 in the The Times’ rankings, trailed 31-30 at halftime but used a 14-2 run in the third quarter to build a 58-47 lead.
Reggie Butler and Bobby Jones each had 16 points for sixth-ranked Long Beach Poly (11-2)..
Fremont 79, Capistrano Valley 69--Shelvion Williams scored 21 points to lead No. 3 Fremont in the American Division final of the San Diego Torrey Pines tournament. Fremont’s Darren Brown scored 17 points and was named tournament MVP.
Elsinore 47, Riverside Poly 43--William Hunt scored 16 points and Travon Keahey added nine points for Elsinore (13-2) in the championship game of the West Valley tournament. Keahey was named tournament MVP.
Jason Lopez scored 18 points for Riverside Poly (12-4).
Santa Margarita 74, Loyola 62--Lenny Collins scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to help No. 7 Santa Margarita (14-1) hold off No. 14 Loyola (12-2) in the third-place game of the National Division at the San Diego Torrey Pines tournament.
Riverside M.L. King 82, Palos Verdes Peninsula 78--Marvin Lea scored six of his 33 points in the second overtime to lead King (12-3) in the fifth-place game of the Las Vegas Prep Classic.
Marina 88, Atascadero 70-- Sophomore guard James Lambert set Marina school records with 47 points and nine three-pointers in a consolation game of the Atascadero tournament.
Lambert, who made 18 of 30 shots and nine of 14 three-pointers, broke the record of 44 points set by Cherokee Parks in 1991.
In girls’ basketball:
Huntington Beach Edison 42, Esperanza 38--Bianca Ziemann scored 17 points and twin Rachael added 13 for No. 25 Edison (9-4), which toppled a higher-ranked opponent for the second consecutive game.
Tina Kalogeropoulos made a three-point basket with 15 seconds left that pulled No. 11 Esperanza to within 40-38, but Rachael Ziemann made two free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Earlier this week, Edison defeated No. 7 Newhall Hart.
Edison will play No. 4 Fullerton Troy in the championship game Monday.

Lynwood 66, Northside (Ark.) 52--All-tournament selections Sade Wiley-Gatewood and Janice Bright each scored 24 points for No. 1 Lynwood, which turned an 18-15 first-quarter deficit into a 56-38 lead after three quarters and held on in the championship game of the Gillette (Wyo.) Classic.
Northside is ranked No. 3 in one national poll. Lynwood (11-0) is ranked No. 13 in the same poll.
Brea Olinda 60, Georgetown Scott County (Ky.) 54--No. 9 Brea Olinda (7-4) had six players score seven or more points in the third-place game of the City of Palms (Fla.) Tournament.
Kelly Agrelius led the Ladycats with 10 points.
