The record might not reflect it, but when Calabasas upset Agoura in the Chaminade tournament on Dec. 29, Calabasas might have saved its season.

At the time, the Coyotes were struggling with a 3-8 record. Since that game, Calabasas is 1-3, which included a Frontier League opening victory against Santa Paula and a last-second, 48-46 loss to Agoura on Friday.

“It was kind of tit for tat with Agoura,” second-year Calabasas Coach Russell White said. “The win was one of the most positive things to happen to this program since I’ve been here. We were down before that win. It’s had a very positive effect on us after that.”

Calabasas has two decent free-throw shooters in Jason Saunders (27 for 35, 77%) and Sky Holm (54 of 66, 81%).

The Coyotes aren’t loaded with prolific scorers, so production at the free-throw line should be critical in a tight Frontier League race.

Although it didn’t really matter against Agoura. Calabasas made 20 of 36 free throws (55%) in the victory over Agoura and 14 of 21 (67%) in the loss to the Chargers.
