From Staff Reports

For one half, Camarillo High was not intimidated by the fast-break game of Oxnard.

Then there was the matter of the second half.

Camarillo led by three points midway through the third quarter, but Nick Curtis and Erik Webb ignited a 14-0 run that sent Oxnard to an 82-65 Pacific View League boys’ basketball victory Wednesday at Camarillo.

It was the 19th consecutive league victory for Oxnard (17-3, 3-0).

Camarillo (9-10, 0-2) got several Yellowjackets into early foul trouble. The exception was Curtis, who drew only two fouls in the first half and finished with 30 points.

“We knew it would be tough playing at Camarillo and we didn’t play very well in the first half,” Curtis said. “We let them run the game.”

Jared Jungwirth scored 24 points for Camarillo.

Curtis scored 11 points in the second quarter and Oxnard used a 10-0 run late in the quarter to take a 33-30 lead with 3:44 to play in the first half.

After Matt Wallman of Camarillo hit consecutive three-pointers to give the Scorpions a 48-45 lead, the Yellowjackets went on a 14-0 run in which Webb scored eight points and the defense forced four turnovers.

“We knew they would not be able to run the length of the court with us,” Curtis said. “We went full-court [press] and opened up a lot of shots on them.”

Camarillo was outscored, 20-10, in the third quarter and trailed, 61-50, entering the fourth.

“It seemed like we got intimidated in the second half,” Jungwirth said. “Everything was working right in the first half. We were playing well in the post and getting the ball inside. We had them in foul trouble and they were frustrated. Then all the sudden we couldn’t move the ball past the three-point line without turning it over.”

Camarillo never got closer than eight points in the fourth quarter.
